Frostgrave Terrain pt.1 - "Design process"

Hello. It's been a really, REALLY, long break. Today I'd like to share with you my last project (but not the only one I've been working on). Frostgrave terrains again. But this time in MDF. Why I didn't finished my plaster ruins, you may ask. Well... at some point I've lost interest in it and I couldn't find any motivation to paint those walls with black primers over and over again. The thing is, every time I thought it's ready for another colour I was finding yet another white spot somewhere between those stones.

So I've decided that if I want to have at least some good looking terrains for this game I need to make them as an MDF laser cut .

Necromunda - Broken Walls for "Necrowalls v41"

Just quick update with new elements. I'm taking a break from Necromunda for some time.

Long section (86mm)

Necromunda - "Necrowalls v41" & "Necrowalls v41 Superstructures" project update.

The idea came (as always btw.) from Queras (Tales from the Basement) somewhere in August. He asked me:

"WeRT, could you design platforms which I will put on my walls set?"

Bolt Action - Wheat and ploughed fields

Wheat fields were made from coconut mat. I don't like how miniatures looks when you put them on just solid piece of mat. So I've cut mat onto smaller pieces and glued them at the sides and in the corners. I had to paint mat fibers because they were too orange for my taste. But... heh... that's another story. Now inside each wheat field you can easily place 12 man, light tank or transporter.
Ploughed fields were made from door mat and textured with dried tea (soaked in PVA glue).

Bolt Action - Buildings part III - Office

My pride and pearl. I'm really glad how it looks. It was the most expensive building so far because for basic structure I paid 7-8 €. But it was worth it. I was inspired by XIX and XX century buildings from Silesia and Galicia (Eastern Europe) region. Maybe it is school? Maybe office? It is not a house for sure. For the first time instead of doing regular cuts I've tried to make half cuts to get bricks texture. I've asked company (they made for me previous laser-cuts) to try using only 30% of laser power. It was perfect shoot. At first gaps between bricks looks too thin but after airbrush primer I found it isn't necessary to fill them with wash.

Bolt Action - Buildings part II - Wooden barn and wooden house

Second part of my buildings for Bolt Action 1939. I will start with the barn. I designed it by myself and laser-cut as an basic structure. Front side, with huge doors, I took from my grandparents real life barn. Back side, with two little windows and small doors, was barn which belongs to relative family from out of town.
Wood texture was made with 1mm thick balsa wood. Rural house have the same basic structure as buildings presented before.

Bolt Action - Buildings part I - Rural houses

Today I want to present to you rural houses. I designed them by myself in Adobe Illustrator. Next, I've asked small company near my job to make laser-cuts for me. Single base structure cost me around 2,8 €. Then I've textured structure with wide variety of materials. How basic structure look you'll find at the bottom of this post.

Bolt Action - Polish Shrine

I’ve designed shrine by myself in Adobe Illustrator for laser cutting in 3mm HDF. After I’ve glued all pieces I’ve filled gaps with green stuff. Then I’ve started painting it and it took me 3 times before I was finally happy with colours and drybrushing. I’m quite happy how it looks and even proud of myself.

Bolt Action - Wooden fences

I've made wooden fences based on idea I’ve found in Dreispitz blog. I designed my own “fence machine” using only plasticard. In 2-3 evenings I managed to build 48 pieces and year later I’ve painted all of them using airbrush for the first time.

Bolt Action - Modular roads

I’ve made modular muddy roads for my Bolt Action 1939 project. The biggest problem I had was matching my electrostatic grass mat with electrostatic grass made by the same producer. I didn’t check it before so after applying grass, I’ve found grass colours were totally different. I’ve spend few hours watering grass (glued with PVA glue) and then removing it with my thumb. I’ve made my own mix of Noch grass (50/50) and it works almost perfect.

Frostgrave - Treasure Tokens

I’ve deicide to make my own treasure tokens for Frostgrave. I've wanted to have them more rich than Northstar Miniatures, but not to overwhelming with coins like Rituals Market did. I poked around drawers and I’ve found still in sprues Plague Monks and Clanrats from WFB 6th ed. I put some more bits and… there you have it! I like how they look.

Frostgrave - Przeszkadzajki skrzynkowe

Cztery potykajko-przeszkadzajki które popełniłem do Frosta. Odlewy z gipsu budowlanego (fck yeah! - około 70g), trochę farb, szpachla budowlana z strzykawki, tufty i takie tam.

Frostgrave - Prototypowe ruiny

Skończyłem prototypowe ruiny do Frostgrave'a. Prototypowe, bo chciałem na nich sprawdzić cały proces malowania, czy najpierw ruiny a potem podstawkę, czy ziemię a dopiero potem kamienie etc. Jestem zadowolony z efektu. Finalny produkt spełnia moje kryterium good enough. Teraz czas na resztę i jak pomyślę ile gipsu mam do pomalowania to aż mnie mdli.

  • Podstawka - MDF 3mm pomalowany Colorissim 3v3 Biały / Satyna (~3 warstwy).
  • Ruiny - Odlewy gipsowe z form Hirts Arts.
  • Skrzynki - odlewy gipsowe z Hirst Arts.
  • Tuft'a - Army Painter Winter Tufts.
  • Śnieżek na skrzynkach i tuft'cie - GW Valhallan Blizzard

Frostgrave - Doktorat z ziemi

Powoli popycham do przodu temat makiet do Frostgrave'a.
